The KEY To Better Living

Welcome to the advice column with a difference, We don’t give advice!

Q: I want to set up my own business but at 53, I think I’m too old. I have a family to support and I’m worried about taking any unnecessary risks, what should I do?

A: A very interesting question, which raises a number of issues that I regularly come across in coaching sessions. The belief that you are too old appears to be limiting you to take action, so I would first ask you, who is saying you are too old?

What new empowering belief could you replace this with that would help give you the power to take action? For example “I am a young 53 year old successful businessman”. It is proven that giving your subconscious mind these ‘instructions’ on a daily basis will help change your perception of the situation as you see it. It helps you to look for evidence that disproves your old and limiting belief. Incidentally, Colonel Sanders didn’t start his KFC franchise until he was 65 years young!

By using the Grow Model you can identify specific goals to help you set up your own business:

Goals (what do you want and by when?)

Reality (what is your current situation? And what do you want instead?)

Options (what are the options available to help you achieve your goal?)

Will (how committed are you to achieving your ultimate goal? When will you start?)

You could find a quiet place and make notes of all your answers to the above questions. These questions will help you clarify many of your hidden fears and focus you on what it takes to achieve your goals.
